Dorm Week: Tips for Organizing Small Spaces

“This Tall Hall apartment was a total dream because of you and your team. WOW!!!! My girl is loving her space. Perfection time and time again working with you!!!!!”

“Thank you so much to your entire team!!! We could never have had our vision come to life without you!!! The girls LOVE their room. We can’t wait to work with you again soon!!!”

“So excited for you to help my son get off to a great start!!!”

We had such a fun week last week as we set up several dorm rooms. It was a week full of shared dorm spaces, shared bathrooms and wardrobe closets where we put together and organized for three different college students. As always, we like to set our clients up for success and working with college students to get their dorm room set up, isn’t any different! As a new semester starts for these students and as their parents bid them farewell for the semester, it is so important knowing they start off on the right foot.

Working with a small space can be tricky, but the type of products you use can create a cozy, yet functional space when used correctly. When we think about small spaces, we think about utilizing storage pieces that make the most of the space we have. For dorm rooms, that means we find items that can be used under the bed, over the door and utilizing vertical space on the wall.

  • 6 cube organizer - This piece is a great addition to a small space because it can store a lot of items. It can stand vertically or lay horizontally making it very versatile for a small space.

  • Farbic cubes - These cubes fit in the cube organizer and can hold many different types of items. In the dorm rooms, we used the cubes to hold household items, such as lightbulbs & batteries, medications and laundry supplies.

  • Rolling cart - A rolling cart is another versatile storage solution when space is limited, this can store under the dorm bed and can be rolled out as needed or it can stay in a small area and be rolled anywhere you need it. We have used this to hold make up, office/school supplies, or bath towels.

  • 3 Drawer nightstand - This nightstand from Dormify is the perfect addition to any dorm room as it can hold a lamp and pictures to create a cozy environment, while also providing more storage in a small space.

  • Over the toilet shelf - This is a great addition to a bathroom area that needs more storage. It conveniently fits above the toilet to create more storage and use the vertical space in a bathroom area that doesn’t provide much storage, especially when it comes to multiple girls using the same bathroom area.

  • Shoe rack - This shoe rack is only 2 shelves and can easily fit under the bed in a dorm room, but it can also easily stack to create more shoe storage if space allows.

  • Drawer dividers - We use these to divide drawers and create a clear space for multiple categories inside the same drawer. This is especially helpful in small spaces because you can use one drawer for multiple categories, while being very organized!

  • Drawer organizers - These drawer organizers are perfect for bathroom drawers, desk drawers and can even be used on the rolling cart to create clearly defined areas for specific items, such as hair items, everyday bathroom items, office supplies, etc. These are modular and can work in many different size spaces!

  • Over the door hooks - When working in small spaces, you have to take advantage of all available space, even over the door! These are great for over the bathroom door to hold multiple towels or over the main door to hold backpacks, purses and reusable bags.

  • Velvet hangers - Velvet hangers are an all time favorite of ours! They are great for every closet, but especially small closets because these are slim and you can fit more clothes in a smaller space due to their slim design.

  • Broom command holder - Using the wall space in a small area is crucial to maximizing your room’s space. We use these in laundry rooms and also we used these in the dorm bathrooms to hold brooms and swiffer mops.

We love the challenge of working in a small space and being able to create functional and stylish spaces. We hope these tips are helpful for you the next time you are working to create organization in a small space.
