Tips for Organizing your Primary Closet
Having an organized closet is essential to helping your morning routine run smoothly! Getting your primary closet organized is one of the first places we recommend our clients start when beginning to get their homes organized. The main reason for this is because this is the space in your home where you begin your day. If you can't find what you are looking for, your day can get off to a rough start.
Tips for organizing your primary closet
Think about the amount of items you're keeping vs. how much space you have.
How much do you want to hang vs. fold?
We like to hang as much as possible. We believe it is easier to maintain and easier to see what you have.
Do you have a wire shelving or a custom closet?
For a wire shelf, you typically have more room to hang items. Whereas in a custom closet, there is room for folded items and bins on the shelves.
Think outside the closet!
Do you have a dresser? If so this could be more space for undergarments and folded items.
Is there another space in your home where you can hang coats?
Is there a space where you can rotate seasonal items?
Look for unused wall space that can be used to hang hats or purses.
Place items that you use together in the same “zone”.
Summer clothes should be in the same area.
Winter clothes should be in the same area.
When labeling, labels can be a little more specific. Typically, we are only storing one category in each bin in a closet. Therefore, as you label each bin you can use one or two words that describe the category.
Hanging tips & tricks
Hang lightweight clothing items higher, such as sleeveless and short sleeve shirts.
Hang heavier weight items lower, such as heavy coats and sweaters.
Hang sleeveless in front of short sleeve and hang short sleeve in front of long sleeve.
Hang in order by sleeve-length.
Example: all sleeveless items together, short sleeve items together and long sleeve items together.
Invest in matching hangers! Trust us, this is worth the investment!
We recommend the velvet hangers.
They take up less room so you can hang more.
They keep items from falling off the hangers.
However, if you don’t want the velvet hangers, have matching hangers or try to get the same hangers for each “zone” in the closet. This helps the closet look and feel cohesive.
Doing all of these things, keeps items visible and accessible.
